WATER SYSTEM PLANNING & WATER TREATMENT ENGINEERING

water storage engineering

In the Midwest more and more communities are turning to SSE for solutions to their drinking water needs. Currently SSE has designed water systems for 18 communities and 17 Water Districts across America's Heartland and we have successfully assisted our clients in passing 39 bond issues. Additionally, we have used our extensive relationships and knowledge to help these communities track down and collect over $80 million dollars from government subsidized loans and free public grants.

Our work with both Water Districts and Municipalities has covered all facets of the drinking water industry. Some of our past projects include designing water plants, water wells, and disinfection systems. Additionally we have provided design for many of these systems, upgrades to existing lines, and necessary storage needs.

Over the years, SSE has designed a multitude of water production systems. We work closely with MoDNR – DGLS to identify possible deep water solutions. Our engineers and technicians have been able to identify deep water bearing formations that are able to serve both small Districts and large Municipalities alike. Our SSE team has designed dozens of systems tapping deep water sources that have produced millions of gallons of pure drinking water.

In cases where acceptable groundwater quality and/or quantity cannot be found, SSE has designed water treatment plants for our clients to cope with those unique situations. SSE has the knowledge and experience to work with any budget in designing a system that deals with the unique problems that some communities have in obtaining clean water. We have designed Iron and Manganese removal plants, surface water treatment plants, and membrane plants.

Occasionally, the EPA adds new requirements that a community must meet or usage growth causes systems to produce past their operating limits. We have helped several communities save money by retrofitting or modify their existing treatment facilities to meet any of these new demands. Recently we designed a surface water treatment plant for the City of Ironton, Missouri. SSE was able to retrofit their existing water treatment plant into a state-of-the-art facility including an ultra-filtration membrane treatment system with a SCADA system for control. This retrofit saved the city thousands of dollars and has allowed them to meet and exceed all their requirements!!

Water storage and disinfection has also been a cornerstone of most of our water system designs. Chlorine gas or liquid feed systems have been designed for a host of our clients across the area. Tank designs can be provided for any size or style that may be necessary for the particular application and budget. Such designs include standpipes, elevated storage, ground storage or pneumatic tanks. Booster stations are commonly used in conjunction with water storage and can be designed for your specific needs.

Water distribution systems are among SSE’s favorite designs. We have installed hundreds of miles of water mains and service lines since the company was founded in 1997. These designs range in size from a few hundred feet for a small client to customers such as Butler County Public Water Supply District #1, which has hundreds of miles of line and over 3,300 customers. Over the past five years, we have specialized in the replacement of entire systems for whole communities. In many cases, these clients have ductile iron or cement lined pipes built pre-1960 that are crumbling. At the end of construction, all of these clients have reduced their water production significantly and been able to bring their system back into compliance with State requirements. These water production savings have saved them thousands of dollars in maintenance and electricity per year. We are also able to implement a radio read metering system to reduce the paperwork and man hour headache caused by monthly meter reading.

As you can see, SSE is a “one stop shop” for all of your water design needs. With a growing reputation and numerous satisfied customers across the Midwest, we are confident that our company can design a water system that meets your needs and fits your budget. If you are looking for a company that can help you from start to finish then look no farther than SSE. Our services include total project administration including: District formation (if necessary), assistance with bond issue elections, preliminary design engineering, grant and loan procurement, easement acquisition, contract administration, and construction observation. Small water districts and large municipal systems all trust SSE for their water needs. We have the experience, knowledge and desire to help transform your ideas into reality!

SSE Helps Ironton Design and Build a Membrane Water Filtration Plant

SSE Helps the City of Ironton Solve Their Drinking Water Needs

City of Ironton – The City of Ironton constructed its original water treatment plant in 1955. The water plant is supplied by Shepherd Mountain Lake, a man-made lake constructed specifically for this purpose. The plant was consistently out of compliance with the Missouri disinfection by-products regulation, and was under a violation order from DNR. Because of the plants age, the City of Ironton had difficulties in finding parts to replace the 1950’s equipment. SSE was able to help Ironton solve their drinking water needs by first completing a water system study for DNR that focused on the water treatment plant. They then worked with the DNR officials and succeeded in obtaining an exemption for the City of Ironton from the maximum contaminant levels for trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids until the City could construct a new facility. SSE designed an expansion project that included a state-of-the-art membrane filtration system for treating surface water.

To facilitate this process, SSE worked with the City to identify the best funding source for the project. An analysis of various funding sources was conducted and it was decided that the best alternative was a Missouri Department of Natural Resources – SRF loan. An engineering analysis of several alternatives for addressing the problem was conducted. The best option was determined to be a combination of rehabilitating a portion of their old plant and adding a new filtration component to the treatment process. In addition to the water treatment plant, the project included two ground storage tanks and two miles of upgrades to the system’s distribution lines.

SSE handled the application process for the SRF loan and was successful in finding $2.5 million to help the City of Ironton pay for the new treatment plant. SSE then oversaw the delivery of equipment, construction of the plant, and operation of facility. Soon they had Ironton up and running smoothly.

Bob Halket, Mayor of Ironton stated, “Having SSE work for us was one of the best decisions we ever made. They solved our problem and helped us work through the normal issues that surround starting up a new plant. The residents of our community have safe drinking water and we are now fully in compliance with the Department of Natural Resources.”

Value of Project: $2.5 million.
